Raf became close friends with Cindy while they were both at Cornerstone College in Cape Town. And because Cindy and her partner Bettina later also lived in London for a good number of years we were able to spend many special moments all together. But in addition to Cape Town and London, we were also very fortunate to be able to spend time with her in a bunch of other places including Germany, Joburg, California, Istanbul, Copenhagen and Zanzibar. And now Cindy’s journey has reached its final earthly destination.
On 19th July Cindy died of Covid. She had been on a ventilator in hospital for a bit more than a week, but her immune system and then her lungs could not stand up to the virus any longer. The circumstances of Cindy’s death were horrible and now, a few weeks later, our sadness is still quite raw.
At the same time, we are filled with gratitude when we think about our friendship and the shared experiences. Cindy always looked out for the needs of others and was ready to help. She was both open-minded and open-hearted. Cindy connected with people wherever she went, encouraging and inspiring them. We are better and richer people today because of our friendship. She was also a wonderful friend, soulmate, partner and wife to Bettina, who Raf has also been friends with since his teens. It was a pretty awesome privilege for us to stand right alongside Cindy and Bettina when they spoke their wedding vows to each other near Cape Town three years ago.
We miss you, Cindy, and will continue to do so.
